Rio Grande do Norte

The Rio Grande do Norte is located in the Northeast, on the eastern end point of the region and Brazil, with an average temperature between 20 and 30 degrees C. With an area of 52.811 km² and a population of 3.4 million inhabitants (2013 IBGE estimative), it has a demographic density of 63.8 inhabitants per square kilometre. The GDP of R$ 42 billion (estimative 2013) has 72.6% generated in trade and services, 23.7% in industry and 3.7% in the agribusiness.

The capital, Natal, has 853.000 inhabitants (2013) and offers excellent quality of life for those who choose to live and headquarter their companies.  Natal has 1.1 million inhabitants and receives most of the industries in its industrial districts. Mossoro, second largest city, is the pole production of tropical fruits for exportation, industries and services in the oil and gas, cement, ceramics and various services, making it one of the most dynamic cities.
With the first fully private airport in Brazil, Rio Grande do Norte has an important development tool, with the potential to become regional hub for passengers and cargo.The Port of Natal also contributes to the good performance of exports, mainly fruit to Europe, and goes through process improvements and increasing its handling capacity of ships and cargoes.
The Export Processing Zone (EPZ) of Macaíba, town of  Natal, is now under the direction of a private investment group, which should stimulate its development in the short term.

Power industry

  • Oil and Gas: RIO GRANDE DO NORTE is a leading producer of oil in Brazil, with current production of 65 thousand barrels per day. New offshore discoveries indicate for a new growth period of the activity. The Potiguar Clara Camarão Refinery produces diesel, petrochemical naphtha, jet fuel and automobile gasoline, which makes Rio Grande do Norte the only state in the country self-sufficient in the production of all types of petroleum products.

    The chain of the oil industry resources, especially concentrated in Mossoro should also be highlighted. New oil and gas fields were recently discovered in deep water (1731 meters) in the Potiguar basin.
  • Electricity from wind turbines: With a capacity of 1.093 Gigawatt (GW) installed in May 2014 by 41 wind farms in operation, Rio Grande do Norte continues its way to establish itself as a leading wind power producers in the country, with the same generating potential in parks under construction, and more projects contracted in auctions, of around 3 GW by 2020.

- CTGAS-ER: The Gas Technology Centre and Renewable Energy, a partnership between Petrobras and SENAI, conducts research, qualifies manpower and provides metrology services for the supply chain of gas and renewable energy.
- Senai Institute of Innovation for Renewable Energies – ISI-ER It is being implemented in Rio Grande do Norte and will be of fundamental importance in sustainable development of renewable energy. The ISI-ER has as a partner, the UFRN - Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, an important Instructor of knowledge and qualified professionals with outstanding performance in the oil and gas sector.
Some of the main Brazilian industrial segments are installed in Rio Grande do Norte, which traditionally has manpower dedicated to the sector, historically important to the state.
Civil construction
This sector has been particularly attractive to foreign companies, mainly European, who work in the hospitality and residential development sectors.
Mineral sector
Metallic Minerals: Highest reserves of tungsten in Brazil (55% of the total) and the second largest iron reserve in the north-eastern region (42%). The main metallic mineral reserves are concentrated along the central region of the state, especially in the central mountain ranges, Caicó and Currais Novos
Non-metallic minerals: Largest National sea salt producer (95%). It has large reserves of limestone, feldspar, kaolin, which favours the implementation of cement and ceramic industries.
Fruit production

Important irrigated production center of tropical fruits (melons, cashews, bananas, mangoes, watermelons, papayas and pineapples), located mainly in the western region (Baraúna, Mossoró, Assú, Macau, Ipanguaçu and Pendências).
Dynamic industry and one of the most important to the state's economy, has a range in the construction, furniture, food and beverage industries as well as hospitality services in general.
